Thank you for your interest to serve as a trustee on the San Juan Unified School District Board of Education representing Trustee Area 1. 

Board Member Role

While organized by trustee areas, each board member represents the interests of the entire community as part of the district's governance team. Authority lies with the board as a whole rather than individual members. Boards are vital to guiding a school district and contribute through actions such as: 

• Oversee and approving the budget
• Approve the Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), strategic plan, collective bargaining agreements, etc. 
• Debate and approve new board policies or changes to existing policies
• Hire and evaluate the superintendent 
• Give direction in collective bargaining 
• Hear expulsion and suspension appeals 
• Approve curriculum adoptions 

Board Member Commitments of Service

At a minimum, board members are expected to attend each meeting of the board. Meetings are currently held on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month with the exception of November and December when only one meeting is held. There is typically no meeting in July. 

Additionally, board members routinely visit schools and programs to learn more about them first-hand and engage with the community. On average, board members have shared that each month they spend: 

• 6-10 hours per month in board meetings
• 4-10 hours reading and preparing for meetings 
• 2-4 hours in committee meetings
• 1-3 hours for 1:1 meetings with the superintendent
• 1-10+ hours engaging with community 
• 0-10 hours at events and site visits.

Keep in mind this is a public process. Your name and responses to candidate questions may be shared as part of public meeting materials. Your address,  contact information and schools where your child(ren) attend (if applicable) will not be shared publicly as part of this process. 

Based on your responses, you do not appear to be eligible for appointment to serve on the board. If you believe this is incorrect, please go back to review your responses or contact the Chief of Staff's Office at (916) 979-8281. 

You indicated that you are an employee of the San Juan Unified School District. Please be aware that as an employee you can be considered for appointment, however, if you are selected you must end your employment prior to assuming office.
